If you check on a map, you can see that the famous Matterhorn (you know, the Toblerone mountain) is very close from the coliving (maybe about 20kms away). Actually, we just need to hike a little bit towards the Lac d’Arbey‘s side to start seeing it’s beautiful shape. But it’s in fact not in the same valley (it’s at the end of the Zermatt valley) and if you want to hike there, it’s actually not that straightforward and will take you 2-3 days with 2 glacier crossing to get there 😉
But with Fabienne we’ve always dreamed of camping at the foot of the Matterhorn! So at the end of August 2024, we took Winchy and our backpacking gear to set on a beautiful multi day hike towards Zermatt from Arolla. This hike is actually the most alpine part of the Matterhorn trek, a 140 kms hike that actually do a full loop around the famous swiss peak.
If you like hiking, camping and you’re not afraid of exposed trails and crossing (easy) glaciers, this hike is for you. You’ll discover incredibly wild and alpine landscapes, with the Matterhorn reward at the end! Of course, it’s not a hike for everyone, but if you fancy discover the Matterhorn without starting from Arolla, we got you covered as well at the end.

Discover the Matterhorn hiking from Zermatt
If you don’t want to hike all the way from Arolla to Zermatt, you can also take the public transportation (sbb.ch) or your car to go to Zermatt and Hike from there. Zermatt is not exactly like our small village of Les Haudères… it’s very touristy, quite expensive (the lifts are so pricey!!!) and you better plan your outing in advance if you want to make the best of your time there.
If you’re not afraid of hiking, here are 2 of our favorite hikes to discover the Matterhorn from Zermatt:
The 5 lakes hike
A gorgeous hike (even if it’s a bit crowded) that passes by 5 different lakes offering insane viewpoints on the Matterhorn.
The Matterhorn Glacier trail
A really cool hike that will take you at the foot of the Matterhorn through alpine lakes, just below the glaciers.
Alpiness coliving is so close to the Matterhorn that it would be a shame not to check it out no?
